Culinary Scene

The most popular local foods that are found everywhere in Japan are sushi, tempura, ramen, yakitori (chicken skewers), udon/soba noodles, kushi-age (deep fried skewers) and casual Japanese eatery restaurants called izakaya.

Favorite culinary and nightlife areas for tourists are:
  • Golden Gai: Located in Shinjuku, more than 200 tiny shanty-style bars, clubs and eateries are squeezed into this area of six narrow lanes.
  • Kabukicho: Also known as the “Sleepless Town”, it is home to the entertainment and red-light district of Shinjuku.
  • Omoide Yokocho
  • Korea Town: Located in Shin-Okubo, it is the largest Korea town in Japan.
  • Shibuya Nonbei Yokocho: Also knows as “Drunkards Alley”, it is full of bars and small eateries located just north of Shibuya station.
